Summary

Star Control drops you into a fierce clash between the Alliance of Free Stars and the predatory Ur‑Quan Hierarchy. Each side fields seven alien vessels, each with distinct maneuvering, fire patterns and a special power that can swing a duel. Battles play out on a single screen where planets act as gravity wells, letting crafty pilots gain momentum or crash their foes.

The 1991 Genesis cartridge was a technical first: a 12‑megabit unlicensed launch that sidestepped Sega’s lock‑out through reverse engineering—a court case that later set the precedent for console reverse‑engineering. Stripping the PC’s scenario editor, the cartridge instead boots with a handful of new missions and swaps synthesized sound for digital MOD music, while Boris Vallejo’s striking repaint of the cover art graces the box.

Critics praised its mix of strategic map play and instant arcade combat, and its vivid alien design has echoed into modern space games such as Mass Effect and Stellaris.

Storyline

Star Control on the Sega Genesis drops you into a 27th‑century galaxy on the brink of annihilation. The ruthless Ur‑Quan Hierarchy, a caste of predatory caterpillar‑like slavers, sweeps through star systems, recruiting species such as the Spathi, Mycon and Umgah. Opposing them is the Alliance of Free Stars, a coalition that includes the Chenjesu, the marsupial Shofixti, the avian Yehat, the robot Mmrnmhrm, the psychic Syreen and the Arilou. Earth’s crew, operating under the Star Control defense program, receives a warning from the Chenjesu and joins the Alliance.

Humanity’s entry into the war begins with a desperate first contact near the Ceres outpost, after which Earth earns a seat on the Alliance council. The campaign’s scenarios walk you through skirmishes such as a lone Syreen Penetrator versus Androsynth, a Ur‑Quan dreadnaught crushing Shofixti scouts, and multi‑ship battles that culminate in an Ur‑Quan armada threatening an Alliance stronghold. Both sides hunt Precursors’ relics left by a vanished ancient race.

The Genesis version adds missions: an Alliance task force tries to halt Mycon colonies, a Chenjesu broodhome fights a Hierarchy swarm, and the Hierarchy defends its colonies from Syreen Penetrators. Meanwhile, the Alliance repels VUX incursions and battles Hierarchy fleets deep in their territory. These scenarios flesh out the epic galactic struggle.
