Summary
Squirrel King is an unlicensed platformer that landed on the Sega Mega Drive, born out of Taiwan’s Gamtec studio. It never saw an official Western release, which gives it a quirky, underground reputation among retro collectors.
What makes the game instantly recognizable is its near‑copy of Capcom’s Chip ’N Dale: Rescue Rangers series. You control two critters called "Chip" and "Dale"—they look like the Disney duo but with a distinct, home‑grown sprite style.
The control layout is simple: the C button makes your character jump, B lets you grab and hurl crates, and A fires a fireball if you’ve stocked one in your inventory. The mechanics feel familiar yet retain a slightly clunky charm that only a 16‑bit hack can provide.
Interestingly, Squirrel King served as the template for another unlicensed Mega Drive oddity, a version of Super Mario World created by Chuanpu and likely published by Ming Super Chip Electronic. That lineage shows how a single bootleg can ripple through the console’s shadow market.
