Summary
Spider‑Man vs. The Kingpin captures the kinetic thrill of swinging through New York’s rooftops with a side‑scrolling platform engine that feels both fast and fluid. I love how the game lets you toss webs in any direction, turning vertical gaps into daring swings while you punch, kick, and web‑blast a menagerie of guard dogs, bats, gorillas, and hired thugs. A quirky twist lets you snap photos of both major and minor foes, then cash them in at the Daily Bugle for extra web fluid—an early nod to the comic’s photo‑journalist vibe. Each round throws an ultra‑hard Venom showdown before the main boss, pushing even seasoned players to the edge of their reflexes. Critics praised the title’s crisp graphics and punchy sound, and the sales numbers proved it: roughly two‑thirds of Genesis owners grabbed a copy, a success that helped keep Marvel’s licensing deal with Sega alive.
Storyline
In the Sega Genesis title Spider-Man (often just called Spider‑Man), the city’s most powerful crime lord, Wilson Fisk – the Kingpin – announces a nuclear bomb has been hidden somewhere in New York and blames the web‑slinger for the threat. With a 24‑hour deadline, Spider‑Man is forced to evade a police manhunt while gathering evidence for his boss, J. Jonah Jameson, by snapping photos of the crime scenes.
The keys needed to deactivate the bomb have been scattered among many of Spider‑Man’s classic foes: Doctor Octopus, Sandman, the Lizard, Hobgoblin, Vulture, Mysterio, Electro and Venom. As he battles each villain, the Kingpin’s plan escalates when Venom kidnaps Mary Jane Parker.
Peter finally secures the remaining keys, disarms the bomb and rescues Mary Jane just before the Kingpin tries to drop her into a pit of acid, clearing his name and saving the city.
