Summary
Spider‑Man and X‑Men – Arcade's Revenge drops you into a neon‑lit maze where the web‑slinger and a handful of mutant heroes must out‑wit the villainous Arcade. You can pick from Spider‑Man, Cyclops, Storm, Gambit or Wolverine, and each hero is locked in a different sector of the trap‑filled labyrinth, forcing you to swap characters to exploit their unique powers – web‑swinging, optic blasts, weather control, kinetic cards or claws. The side‑scrolling action feels like a frantic relay race, with bosses popping up just when you think you’ve cleared a corridor. LJN rode the wave of the early‑90s X‑Men cartoon craze, hoping to cash in on the superhero hype that had already made earlier Spider‑Man and X‑Men titles popular, and the game finally resurfaced in the 2026 Marvel MaXimum Collection for retro fans. Critics were split: while Computer and Video Games and Mean Machines gave it high marks (88/100 and 89/100), AllGame and Sega Magazine were far harsher, rating it 2/5 and 51/100 respectively, and EGM settled somewhere in the middle with a 6/10.
Storyline
While swinging through New York, Spider‑Man spots the sudden disappearance of X‑Men Cyclops, Storm and Wolverine. He then sees a garbage‑truck tube sucking up Gambit and realizes the mastermind is Arcade, so he webs the truck and tracks the villain to an abandoned building – the first stage of the game. Inside, Spider‑Man must deactivate a series of "Security Eyes" in the exact order hinted at by his Spider‑Sense before entering Arcade’s deadly Murderworld.
Murderworld is a massive amusement‑park‑like simulation Arcade built to trap and destroy the heroes. The player controls each Marvel hero through two linked "events"; the first can be chosen freely, but the second only unlocks after the first is completed. All characters share a single pool of lives, so a loss for one affects the others. After surviving each hero’s challenges, Spider‑Man faces Arcade in a final showdown and escapes the twisted park.
