Summary

Speedball 2 (often called Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe) landed on the Sega Genesis with a neon‑lit, ultra‑violent twist on handball and ice‑hockey that still feels fresh today. The Bitmap Brothers packed the game with slick metal graphics and a TV‑style presentation that makes every match feel like a broadcast from a dystopian arena.

The court now hosts nine players per side, and you can rack up extra points by slamming the ball into targets on the floor and walls. A standard goal nets ten points, but score‑multiplier ramps can boost that to fifteen or twenty, and injuring an opponent earns the same reward. If a player is taken out, one of three substitutes steps in, and when all substitutes are gone the injured star is forced back in, bloodied but determined.

Five distinct modes—knockout, cup, league, practice, and multiplayer—let you chase glory in short, frantic bouts. Each match runs for 180 seconds, split into two halves, so the action never drags. The league mode adds a team‑management layer, letting you train and upgrade your squad between games.

Critics loved it: Mega gave it 81%, Sega Force 90%, and MegaTech 92%, while the game snagged Mega’s 7th‑best‑of‑all‑time spot and the Golden Joystick Award for Best Soundtrack. Amiga Power even voted it the third‑best game ever, and PC Gamer later called it one of the most fun sports titles still worth playing.

With over two million copies sold, Speedball 2 spawned numerous remakes—from the 3D PlayStation spin‑off Speedball 2100 to the HD re‑release on Steam. Its blend of brutal gameplay, strategic team management, and relentless pace has cemented its reputation as a cult classic that still inspires new versions today.

Storyline

Speedball 2 picks up the chaotic aftermath of the original league, which was founded in 2095 but collapsed under rampant violence and corruption. The failure turned the sport into an underground phenomenon as anarchy spread through the organization. Five years later, promoters tried to revive public interest, and the sequel was launched as a fresh attempt to bring the game back into the light. The story officially begins in 2105, when a new team called Brutal Deluxe steps onto the arena, signaling the rebirth of the sport under the Speedball 2 banner.
