Summary

In 1999 I stumbled upon a curious piece of Sonic lore: the Sonic 1 Beta Hoax, a ROM hack created by Cyan Helkaraxe. Cyan dug into the undocumented Sonic 1 REV00 ROM, using trial‑and‑error to mimic what a genuine prototype might have looked like, and released his work under the ambiguous title “Sonic 1 beta?” on Simon Wai’s Sonic 2 Beta page.

The hoax sparked a wave of speculation within the Sonic community, drawing fresh attention to the original game. When the truth emerged, Andy Wolan recognized Cyan’s technical effort and invited him to join the Sonic Stuff Research Group, cementing the hack’s place in fan‑driven research history.

What makes the Sonic 1 Beta Hoax stand out isn’t the gameplay—it’s the way a single fan‑made ROM sparked discussion, collaboration, and a deeper appreciation for the hidden corners of Sonic’s early development.
