Summary

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (often just called Sonic 3) expands the classic 2D side‑scrolling formula with a seamless two‑player mode that lets a second gamer jump in as Tails at any moment. Tails can hover briefly by spinning his twin tails and even swim underwater, giving the duo a fresh set of tactics that Sonic alone can’t use.

The game is split into six zones, each with two acts packed with vertical loops, corkscrews, breakable walls and bottomless pits. Rings act as health, while power‑up monitors hand out extra lives, shields or temporary invincibility. Two distinct bonus stages reward ring collectors: a gumball‑machine‑like corridor and a 3‑D sphere maze that hides the Chaos Emeralds needed to transform into Super Sonic.

A unique lock‑on adapter lets Sonic 3 snap onto the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, creating Sonic 3 & Knuckles. In this merged version players can replay Sonic 3 zones as Knuckles, tackle Sonic & Knuckles levels as Tails, and unlock Super Emeralds that grant Hyper forms for both Sonic and Knuckles, plus a Super form for Tails.

Development began in early 1993 at Sega Technical Institute, originally aiming for an isometric design with the unreleased Sega Virtua Processor chip. Pop icon Michael Jackson contributed to the soundtrack before his work was replaced in later releases. Sega poured $20 million into U.S. marketing, and the title sold over a million copies in the United States alone, helping the combined Sonic 3 & Knuckles package reach four million units worldwide and earn high praise for its graphics, level design and gameplay innovations.

Storyline

After the events of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Dr. Robotnik’s space station, the Death Egg, crash‑lands on the floating Angel Island. The impact pulls the island down into the ocean, where Robotnik encounters Knuckles the Echidna, the island’s native guardian of the Master Emerald that keeps Angel Island aloft. Robotnik tricks Knuckles into thinking Sonic wants the Emerald, turning the echidna against Sonic while the villain repairs the Death Egg.

Sonic and Tails fly to Angel Island in their biplane, the Tornado, and Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic. Knuckles ambushes them and steals the emeralds, forcing the duo to trek across the island’s traps and Robotnik’s new inventions. The pair battles Knuckles at the Launch Base as the Death Egg is being rebuilt, but the massive ship relaunches.

A final showdown takes place on a platform attached to the Death Egg; Sonic and Tails defeat Robotnik, sending the Death Egg crashing back onto Angel Island. The adventure sets the stage for the sequel, Sonic & Knuckles, and introduces Knuckles as Robotnik’s newest recruit on this spin‑dashing escapade.
