Summary

Sonic 1 Remastered is a fan‑crafted hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Mega Drive, built by a developer known as Puto. Unlike typical visual‑only hacks, this version rewrites the game’s assembly code to add genuine new functionality. The most striking change is the ability to pick either Sonic or Tails right from the title screen, letting you experience the classic stages with a different character’s abilities. The hack also introduces a handful of extra features that weren’t present in the 1991 release, though the core level layouts and palettes stay true to the original. A second, unofficial iteration (version 2) briefly leaked without Puto’s consent, but he later approved its upload to the community wiki, cementing both versions as part of the retro‑hacking lore.
