Summary
Sonic & Knuckles still feels like a surprise hidden in my old cartridge pile – its lock‑on hatch lets you jam another Genesis game right into its slot, turning a single title into a modular platform. Pick either Sonic or Knuckles at the start, and you immediately notice how the hedge‑hog leaps higher and uses shield abilities while the echidna glides, climbs walls and punches enemies. Six zones split into two acts each hide giant rings that open Special Stages, where you dash through a 3D maze of colored spheres to earn Chaos Emeralds; collect all seven and you can morph into Super Sonic or Super Knuckles. Hooking Sonic 3 transforms the pair into Sonic 3 & Knuckles, swapping Knuckles into the earlier levels, adding Tails as a playable hero and, for the first time, a save‑file option. Critics praised the extra replay value, and the game still ships today on the Sega Genesis Flashback compilation, proving the lock‑on concept endures.
Storyline
After Sonic 3, Dr. Robotnik’s orbital weapon, the Death Egg, crashes onto Angel Island. Sonic heads there to recover the Chaos Emeralds and runs into Knuckles, who assumes Sonic wants the gems for himself. In Hidden Palace Zone Sonic defeats Knuckles and discovers Robotnik stealing the Master Emerald, the source of the island’s floating power.
Knuckles attacks Robotnik but is electro‑shocked, then leads Sonic through a portal to Sky Sanctuary where the Death Egg is being relaunched. Sonic infiltrates the massive ship, transforms into Super Sonic, defeats Robotnik and reclaims the Master Emerald, restoring the island’s levitation.
Knuckles’s own story begins with an EggRobo ambush that drives him to the wrecked Sky Sanctuary. There, a Mecha‑Sonic powered by the Master Emerald confronts him, but Knuckles ultimately wins. Sonic arrives in the Tornado, flies Knuckles and the Master Emerald back to Angel Island. When all Chaos Emeralds are collected the island rises into the sky; without them it plummets into the ocean.
