Summary

Sonic & Knuckles lets you literally snap the original Sonic the Hedgehog cartridge onto its back, instantly unlocking the hidden Blue Sphere minigame. By doing so you gain access to every variation of the special stages, each tagged with its own level number and password, turning a simple side‑scroller into a password‑driven puzzle hunt. The developers even toyed with letting you play as Knuckles in the original Sonic, but his wall‑climbing and gliding moves clashed with that level’s design, so the idea was shelved. Beyond the Blue Spheres, the lock‑on tech lets you merge Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 3 to expand Floating Island into a massive 34‑meg adventure, or with Sonic 2 to control Knuckles with his full move set. The cartridge also supports playing as Sonic, Knuckles, and even Tails when you have a save file, making it a versatile hub for any Genesis‑era Sonic fan.

Storyline

In Sonic & Knuckles, the iconic hedgehog teams up with Knuckles the Echidna to stop Dr. Robotnik’s rotten Death Egg invasion. Together they battle through the combined levels of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic & Knuckles to thwart the villain’s plans.
