The clever solution was an adapter built into the Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, letting you plug the Sonic 3 cartridge directly into it and instantly merge the two halves into Sonic 3 & Knuckles. This combination isn’t just a simple link‑up; it reshapes level layouts, lets you tackle Sonic 3 zones as Knuckles or Sonic & Knuckles stages as Tails, and even adds a save system for the later levels. The real payoff comes from the Super Emeralds, hidden in special stages that only appear after you’ve gathered all seven Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3—collect them and you unlock Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails, each with their own flashy abilities. Together the two games moved four million units worldwide, cementing their place among the Genesis’s biggest hits.

Storyline

After the events of Sonic 3, Dr. Robotnik’s orbital weapon, the Death Egg, crash‑lands on Angel Island. Sonic heads there to recover the Chaos Emeralds and soon clashes with Knuckles, who believes Sonic wants the gems for himself. In Hidden Palace Zone Sonic defeats Knuckles and discovers Robotnik stealing the Master Emerald, the source of the island’s levitation. Robotnik shocks Knuckles with electricity and reveals a portal to Sky Sanctuary, where the Death Egg is being relaunched. Sonic infiltrates the Death Egg, defeats Robotnik as Super Sonic, retrieves the Master Emerald and returns it to Angel Island, causing the island to rise back into the sky. In Knuckles’s story, which follows Sonic’s, EggRobo attacks him and leads him to the wrecked Sky Sanctuary. There Mecha Sonic appears, uses the Master Emerald to gain a Super form and battles Knuckles until Knuckles finally defeats the mecha. Sonic pilots the Tornado, brings Knuckles and the Master Emerald back to Angel Island. If the player collects all Chaos Emeralds the island ascends; without them it plummets into the ocean. This is the storyline of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.
