Summary

Sonic & Knuckles blew my mind back in the day with its lock‑on cartridge – a literal hatch you could open and snap another game into. When you slot Sonic the Hedgehog 3 into it, the two titles fuse into Sonic 3 & Knuckles, expanding level layouts, letting you play Sonic 3 stages as Knuckles or Sonic & Knuckles zones as Tails, and even saving progress in the newer sections. Hooking up Sonic 2 swaps in Knuckles for the classic stages, giving the hedgehog’s sequel a fresh set of wall‑climbing moves and glides, while any older Genesis game triggers the quirky “No Way!” screen and unlocks the hidden Blue Sphere minigame that reshapes the Chaos Emerald special stages. The game also hides two kinds of bonus stages: one where you orbit glowing spheres while a light fence rises from below, and another slot‑machine‑themed room that dishes out extra lives and power‑ups. Collecting all seven Chaos Emeralds still rewards the iconic Super Sonic or Super Knuckles transformation, and modern re‑releases on Virtual Console or the Ultimate Genesis Collection preserve the core platforming, though they sadly omit the original lock‑on functionality.

Storyline

In Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic and Knuckles join forces to defeat Dr. Robotnik’s rotten Death Egg invasion. The two heroes team up against the villain’s looming threat, battling through the chaotic assault on the world.
