Summary

When Sonic 3D Blast hit the Genesis it felt like the series finally tried something different. The game’s isometric angle—taken from Sonic Labyrinth and spiced up with the pre‑rendered, sprite‑converted 3D models that defined Donkey Kong Country—lets you wander bright, depth‑filled zones while hunting flickies, the tiny birds borrowed from the 1984 Flicky arcade hit.

Most of the programming was outsourced to the UK studio Traveller’s Tales, and the whole project was squeezed into an eight‑month sprint that began in July 1995. Lead programmer Jon Burton even slipped an Easter‑egg exception handler into the code: crash the game and you’re greeted by a secret level‑select screen instead of a blue error.

Beyond the flashy FMV intro, which used heavy compression to fit in a 4 MB cartridge, the title rewards precision—collect the colored flickies, stock up on rings, and exchange them for special stages where the seven Chaos Emeralds hide. Critics loved the fresh control feel, the soundtrack by Jun Senoue and colleagues, and the way the graphics pushed the Mega Drive’s palette to its limit.

Outside North America the game is known as "Sonic 3D: Flickies’ Island" and, more than two decades later, an unofficial director’s‑cut patch by Burton adds a level editor, time‑attack mode, and a Super Sonic transformation.

Storyline

Sonic 3D Blast drops players onto a mysterious island that exists in an alternate dimension. Dr. Robotnik (Dr. Eggman) discovers the island’s native birds, the Flickies, who can jump anywhere using giant Dimension Rings. He captures the birds and converts them into robotic helpers to locate the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic arrives, learns of Robotnik’s scheme, and sets out to rescue the Flickies while battling the villain’s assorted machines.

Throughout the levels Sonic frees the Flickies, each rescue bringing him closer to the Emeralds. Collecting every Chaos Emerald opens a black void where Robotnik pilots a massive robot for a final showdown. Sonic dismantles the robot’s weapons, defeats Robotnik and liberates the Flickies. If any Emerald is missing, Robotnik escapes with the remaining ones.
