Summary
Soleil, the PAL title for Crusader of Centy, puts you in an overhead world where swordplay meets puzzle‑solving. Early in the adventure you can speak to animals, and a dog named Mac (Johnny in the UK) becomes your first companion. By the end you can recruit up to sixteen creatures, each granting a unique technique you can equip two at a time to access new areas.
Nextech, staffed by several former Wolf Team designers, built the game under Sega’s 1994 “Mega Roleplay Project.” Producer Yayoi Onda aimed for an action RPG that anyone could pick up, emphasizing growth through new abilities and animal allies. Sega commissioned the title to expand its RPG catalog, while Atlus handled the North American release.
The soundtrack was composed entirely by concert pianist Motokazu Shinoda, giving the Genesis a surprisingly melodic score. Localization covered English, French, German, Spanish and Korean, with Atlus publishing the US version in March 1995. Reviewers often compare Soleil’s visuals and exploration to The Legend of Zelda’s A Link to the Past, noting that despite some control and sound quirks the animal‑driven gameplay still charms retro fans.
Storyline
In the Genesis title Soleil, the quiet village of Soleil sits on a continent swarmed by monsters, and the king dispatches the Crusaders of Soleil to protect humanity. The story opens with a strict law that all fourteen‑year‑old boys must train for battle; the protagonist, Corona, has just turned fourteen and inherits his late father’s sword and shield. Early on, after rescuing an old lady, Corona is directed to a fortuneteller west of town who swaps his human speech for the ability to converse with animals and plants, and a host of creatures soon joins him, granting special powers.
During the first half of the game Corona can only speak with wildlife, using their help to defeat Maldra the Dragon (known simply as the dragon in other regions). With the dragon slain, the narrative shifts: Corona regains his voice with humans, begins traveling through time, and works to forge a better future. He also seeks the deeper reason behind the relentless war between monsters and mankind, aiming to understand and perhaps end the conflict.
