Summary
Shining in the Darkness dropped players into a dark, labyrinthine world seen from a vivid 3‑D perspective, letting me guide the young hero, his sister Pyra and the mute Milo through twisty corridors filled with monsters. The game blends classic turn‑based battles with a clever icon‑based menu that feels instantly intuitive for swapping gear, casting spells, or fleeing an ambush. Scattered throughout the mazes are three captive characters; rescuing them changes dialogue and can unlock alternate endings, adding real replay value. Random monster encounters keep tension high, while carefully placed boss rooms punctuate the exploration with challenging fights.
Sega handed Climax a shoestring budget, so Hiroyuki Takahashi ended up writing, producing and handling much of the graphics and programming himself—a true labor of love. Reviewers in Europe praised the detailed sprites, scaling effects and tavern ambience, often rating the title above 90 percent. Its menu system foreshadowed later console RPGs and helped cement the Shining series as a cornerstone of early '90s gaming. Even today the title is remembered for bringing a genuine sense of "being inside the dungeon" to the Genesis.
Storyline
Shining in the Darkness takes place in the Kingdom of Thornwood, where the king’s daughter, Princess Jessa, has vanished near the Labyrinth. King Drake and his court have no clue where she is.
The hero, revealed as Mortred’s son, teams up with the young mage Milo and the fiery companion Pyra. Their mission is to locate the missing princess and uncover the lost Arms of Light.
Along the way they learn that the kingdom is threatened by the dark sorcerer Dark Sol, who also captured the hero’s own father. The party must rescue both the princess and the father while stopping Dark Sol’s plans.
