Summary
Shining in the Darkness drops you into a first‑person, 3D dungeon maze where you and two companions, Pyra and Milo, wander through cramped corridors, stumble on hidden rooms, and trigger turn‑based battles that feel like a cross between Dragon Quest and Wizardry. The game’s icon‑based menu lets you equip gear, cast spells, and talk to townsfolk with a few button presses, while optional rescues of three trapped characters subtly reshape the ending. Fast‑scrolling panoramas and water‑effect sprites keep the visual flow surprisingly smooth for a 1991 console title.
Development was a shoestring effort: Sega gave the out‑sider team the bare minimum budget, so writer‑producer Hiroyuki Takahashi ended up handling most of the programming and graphics himself. He aimed for a kind of ‘realism’ that didn’t mean photorealism but rather the sensation of actually walking through ancient houses and dank dungeons, a feeling he borrowed from the older Wizardry titles.
Critics loved it. Sega Pro gave it a 93 % score, praising the detailed graphics, tavern sound design, and replayability, while Computer Gaming World called it a solid step toward true CRPGs. By the end of 1991 the game had sold over 300 000 copies, cementing its place as a pioneer of Japanese console RPGs in Europe and spawning the long‑running Shining series.
Storyline
*Shining in the Darkness* takes place in the enchanted Kingdom of Thornwood, where the king’s daughter and the hero’s own father have mysteriously vanished. The evil sorcerer Dark Sol has risen to threaten the realm, and the protagonist is tasked with locating the legendary Arms of Light, rescuing the princess and his father, and putting an end to Dark Sol’s dark ambitions. The quest leads the warrior through a treacherous Labyrinth filled with savage creatures, where he must pass the Test of the Ancients to become a true shining knight. Dark Sol is later revealed to be the son of Darksol and Mishaela, whisked away by the Greater Devil Oddeye after Darksol’s defeat, placing the story’s events after those of *Shining Force II*.
