Summary

Shaq Fu lets you step into the shoes of NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal for a surprisingly eclectic martial‑arts showdown. The game mixes over‑the‑top shuriken throws, voodoo‑infused earthquakes and a mummy‑wrap finisher with a roster that eventually expands to twelve fighters, each boasting a handful of secret power moves.

The Sega Genesis edition stands out thanks to five extra characters—Auroch, Colonel, Diesel, Leotsu and Nezu—and three additional stages, including a Lab, a Wasteland and the Yasko Mines. A hidden button combo unlocks a "blood code" that adds modest gore and finishing moves while keeping the rating modest.

Critics were split: GamePro praised the Genesis version’s larger cast and tighter controls, while scores hovered around the 6/10 mark and some outlets labeled it one of the worst games ever made. Despite the mixed reception, the title remains a quirky footnote in retro‑gaming history, remembered as much for its bizarre premise as for its occasional flashes of fun.

Storyline

In Shaq Fu, the NBA star Shaquille O'Neal wanders into a Tokyo dojo while on his way to a charity basketball game. He meets the martial‑arts master Leotsu, who mistakenly believes Shaq is the warrior foretold by the Stars, and transports him to the mysterious Second World. There, Shaq must rescue a young boy named Nezu from the clutches of the evil mummy Sett‑Ra and his legion of minions. After a fierce battle, he defeats Sett‑Ra, saves Nezu, and returns to his own world just in time for the big game.

Back on Earth, Shaq discovers that Beast, one of Sett‑Ra’s minions, has followed him and joined the opposing basketball team, seeking a rematch. The unexpected opponent turns the final showdown into a literal fight‑for‑the‑court, blending martial arts and hoops in a uniquely retro adventure.
