Summary
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi, often just called Shadow Dancer, is a tight side‑scrolling action title that lets you control a ninja accompanied by a feisty dog. The canine has its own meter; holding the attack button charges it and when the bar is full the dog lunges at the nearest foe, even while you’re jumping. This extra layer of strategy gives a sense of partnership not seen in the 1989 arcade predecessor.
The game spans five stages, each split into three sub‑areas before a boss fight, with the final level packed into five rapid rooms that end on Sauros' throne. Hidden bonus lives pepper the routes, and a recurring bonus stage drops you from a skyscraper to rain down shuriken fire on fifty advancing ninjas.
Critics praised its flicker‑free animation, detailed sprites and surprisingly responsive controls; retro magazines awarded it near‑perfect scores, while modern retros hail the dog‑assist mechanic as the franchise’s coolest feature.
Storyline
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi drops you into a ruined New York City in 1997, now ruled by the ninja cult Union Lizard. The group worships a massive reptilian demon and has taken the surviving citizens hostage, turning the streets into a panic‑filled battlefield. A lone ninja—identified as Hayate, the son of series hero Joe Musashi, in the Japanese manual, and as the retired Joe Musashi himself in the English manual—emerges from hiding, accompanied by his faithful dog Yamato. After his former student Kato is mortally wounded investigating the cult, the ninja vows revenge and sets out to free the captives. Using stealth, ninja weapons and magic, he battles the relentless reptilian threat to restore peace to the city.
