Summary
Segapede is a little‑known Sega Mega Drive action prototype that surfaced only after developer Craig Stitt uploaded the sole ROM in 2020. The game was being built by Sega Technical Institute in 1994, right after they wrapped up Sonic 2 and Sonic Spinball, and it was intended as a platformer that reused assets from a cut‑scene zone of Sonic 2 called Hidden Palace. Those graphics were never meant to be final – they served as placeholders while the team tried to flesh out the concept. Unfortunately, STI’s resources were stretched thin, forcing them to abandon the project in favor of other titles, so Segapede never saw an official release or even a public announcement. The rediscovered footage now offers a rare glimpse into what could have been a quirky side‑step for the Sonic team.
Storyline
Segapede, the Sega Genesis title (often just called Segapede), was originally planned to be set within the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. The concept tied the fast‑paced action of the game to Sonic’s world, though the final release did not explicitly feature Sonic characters.
