Summary

Saturday Night Slam Masters on the Sega Genesis surprised me with a few quirks you won’t find in the arcade or SNES versions. The most eye‑catching addition is the exclusive Death Match mode, complete with a barbed‑wire ring that lets you step outside the ropes and rummage for improvised weapons. Unlike the arcade, the Genesis port lets you pick The Scorpion and Jumbo for single battles, expanding the roster’s variety. All ten wrestlers sport Tetsuo Hara’s signature manga art not just on the box but right in the game’s attract screen and character portraits, giving each bout a gritty comic‑book feel. The controls stay simple—jump, attack, and pin—but they’re enough to pull off grabs, throws, and even climb the turnbuckle for high‑risk slams. Reviewers were split: Sega‑16 gave it a respectable 7/10, praising the death‑match twist, while Next Generation only handed it 2/5, calling the overall port generic. Still, the blend of wrestling drama and fighting‑game mechanics makes the Genesis version a memorable, if uneven, slice of early‑90s arcade nostalgia.

Storyline

Saturday Night Slammasters pits ten colorful wrestlers against each other in a high‑stakes tournament. The player must battle through each opponent to claim the championship belt and ultimately confront the masked Scorpion, the leader of the Blood Wrestling Association.
The roster includes Biff Slamkovich, a Russian trainee of Haggar, and his rival Gunloc, who in the English version is hinted to be related to Street Fighter’s Guile. The Great Oni is a kabuki‑styled Japanese fighter, while Titanic Tim is a massive Englishman who once teamed with Street Fighter’s Birdie. El Stingray brings Mexican high‑flying flair, and Alexander the Grater is an unforgiving Australian bruiser. King Rasta Mon fights alongside his pet monkey Freak, Jumbo Flapjack is a sadistic giant serving the Scorpion, and former Final Fight hero Mike Haggar appears before his mayoral election, sometimes celebrated by his daughter Jessica.
The Scorpion, a mysterious masked wrestler, serves as the final boss; defeating him ends the tournament and crowns the champion.
