Summary
Sally Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog (sometimes called Sally Acorn in Sonic 1) is a fan‑made ROM hack that swaps Sonic for Princess Sally from the classic DIC cartoon and Archie comics. Because Sally moves slower and can’t spin‑dash, the hack gives her a suite of stealth‑ and agility‑focused tricks that let her slip through gaps and reach spots Sonic would miss. Her handheld computer, NICOLE, adds a sci‑fi twist: it can fire lasers and even reprogram item monitors and traps, turning the familiar Genesis levels into a subtle puzzle playground.
The project was spearheaded by Sonic Retro member E‑122‑Psi, with extra coding help from snkenjoi, MarkeyJester, Aquaslash, Selbi and Hayate. I’m always amazed at how this community‑driven effort reshapes a beloved classic while staying true to its retro charm.
Storyline
In Sonic the Hedgehog (commonly called Sonic 1) on the Sega Genesis, Sally Acorn is forced into hiding after Dr. Robotnik conquers the kingdom of Mobotropolis and turns its citizens into robots. From the shadows she organizes Sonic and a band of freedom fighters, launching a series of missions to thwart the Mad Doctor’s evil schemes.
