Summary

When the Mega Drive version of Darius II landed in Japan in 1990, the North‑American release a year later arrived under the casual title Sagaia. The port isn’t just a straight conversion; it adds a hidden boss‑rush mode you can unlock with a code, and it reshuffles a few encounters—Steel Spine swaps levels and the original Killer Higia is swapped for a look‑alike called Nehonojia.

Because the Genesis hardware couldn’t handle two players for this title, the developers gave us a choice between Proco Jr. and Tiat Young. Proco behaves like the arcade hero, while Tiat starts each life with a modest boost to every weapon, making her a handy option for newcomers.

The familiar red, green, and blue power‑ups still upgrade missiles, bombs, and shields, but Sagaia sprinkles in a yellow laser upgrade and a rainbow item that nudges all weapons up one level. Along the way, you’ll run into “captains”—mini‑bosses that are essentially scaled‑down versions of the original Darius foes, complete with their seafood‑themed designs.

All of this unfolds in a branching map that covers the inner half of the Solar System, preserving the series’ non‑linear level system while keeping the quirky marine‑creature enemies that make the Darius lineage so distinctive.

Storyline

Darius II (known as Sagaia on the Genesis) continues the story after the original Darius. The colonists have moved to the planet Olga while the original world is being rebuilt after the Belser Army’s invasion. From Olga’s space‑flight headquarters a distress signal arrives from Earth, describing alien ships that look like the Belser fleet. Believing the signal may come from the original Earth colonists, the people of Darius dispatch the next‑generation pilots Proco Jr. and Tiat Young.

The two pilots climb aboard the Silverhawk, answer the may‑day broadcast and set out to confront the new evil force threatening the galaxy. Their mission ties together the ruined Darius, the newly‑born world Orga, and the lingering threat of the Belser Army.
