Summary

Art of Fighting, known in Japan as Dragon & Tiger Fist, debuted in 1992 as SNK’s first entry in the series. The game pairs Kyokugenryu Karate practitioners Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia as they hunt down South Town’s criminals while searching for Ryo’s missing sister Yuri. Its standout mechanics include a super gauge that fuels powerful Desperation Moves, visible damage on fighters, and a spirit gauge that drains when special techniques are used or when opponents are taunted. Matches follow the classic best‑two‑out‑of‑three format, with a utility button that toggles between punches, kicks and throws, and a dedicated taunt button that can even siphon the opponent’s spirit. When the player clears a bonus round, they unlock a “super death blow,” adding a strategic layer to the otherwise straightforward punch‑and‑kick combat. The Genesis port stays true to the Neo Geo original, tweaking graphics and controls only slightly while preserving the series‑defining storytelling focus.

Storyline

Ryuuko no Ken (known casually as Art of Fighting) opens in 1978 with the “Invincible Dragon” Ryo Sakazaki and his best friend Robert Garcia on a desperate hunt for Ryo’s sister Yuri. She has been seized by the South Town mob boss Mr. Big, forcing the duo to battle through a gauntlet of thugs using their Kyokugen Karate style. After a series of gritty fights, Ryo and Robert finally corner Mr. Big, defeat him, and are led to the hidden location where Yuri is being held.

Yuri, however, is not alone; an enigmatic assassin wearing a tengu mask guards her. The masked foe falls to Ryo’s blows, but before the final blow can land, Yuri steps in, demanding a pause. The story ends on a cliff‑hanger, with Yuri poised to reveal the assassin’s true identity, leaving players eager for the next chapter.
