Summary

Rolling Thunder 2 feels like a polished upgrade to the original arcade hit, especially when I fire side‑by‑side with a friend. The game lets Player 1 control Leila, a sleek female agent, while Player 2 becomes Albatross, but both wield identical pistols and share the same two‑hit, one‑bullet‑kill mechanic. When the pistol runs dry it switches to a slow “chaser” bullet, and hidden doors let you swap in a submachine gun – a handy upgrade that’s tracked by an on‑screen ammo counter for easy sharing. Each stage starts fresh, so you can’t hoard rounds between levels.

Visually, the sequel jumps to a more futuristic vibe: the Maskers are now cyber‑enhanced foes, and the environments shift from a sunny Florida resort to a hidden Egyptian pyramid, both disguises for the Geldra organization. The graphics are noticeably sharper than the 1986 predecessor.

The Genesis port earned rave scores in the early ’90s (92% from CVG, 23/25 from GamePro), though later Virtual Console releases were judged more harshly. The title resurfaced on modern consoles via Namco Museum on Switch (2017) and the Arcade Archives collection for Switch and PS4 (2023).

Storyline

Rolling Thunder 2 drops players back into the 1990s, where the supposedly defeated Geldra organization has resurfaced and begun destroying a string of world satellites from orbit. The game follows a member of the WCPO’s Rolling Thunder task force as they race to stop the rogue syndicate.
Two‑player co‑op is now possible: Player 1 controls the female agent Leila, while Player 2 takes the role of the male operative Albatross. Both characters must battle through heavily armed enemy forces to reach Geldra’s hidden bases. The first half of the action unfolds at a seaside resort in Florida that masks a Geldra facility, and the second half shifts to a mysterious Egyptian pyramid that serves as another covert base. Each location is packed with platforming challenges and gun‑fight sequences as the duo works to thwart the satellite sabotage.
