Summary

RoboCop vs. Terminator landed on the Genesis with a gritty, run‑and‑gun style that felt a cut above its contemporaries. Virgin leveraged David Perry’s Mega‑Drive engine—formerly the backbone of Cool Spot and Global Gladiators—and tweaked it with a linked‑list sprite system so the massive Terminator bosses could dominate the screen without choking the hardware.

The gameplay borrowed the tight vectored‑bullet mechanics popularized by Contra III, letting you weave through waves of robotic dogs, spider bots and endoskeletons while staying true to the franchise’s gun‑heavy feel. Graphic gore was turned up to eleven, earning the title Electronic Gaming Monthly’s Bloodiest Game of 1993, a claim that still gets mentioned in retro forums.

Behind the scenes, the license alone cost an eye‑watering $2 million, reflecting how seriously the IPs were treated even back then. It’s a rare glimpse of ‘90s cross‑franchise ambition, and the Genesis version still holds a special spot for collectors who appreciate that blend of brutal action and clever engineering.

Storyline

RoboCop Versus the Terminator (often called RoboCop vs. Terminator) tells two parallel time‑travel sagas depending on the console. In the SNES version, resistance fighter Flo is sent back to erase RoboCop’s cybernetic tech, the seed of Skynet. Skynet counters by dispatching Terminators, forcing RoboCop to ally with Flo, battle the machines, OCP forces and a hostile ED‑209, and ultimately have his body digitized. Using his digital mind he hijacks a robotics plant, rebuilds himself and shatters Skynet’s central CPU, securing humanity’s future.

The Genesis/ Mega Drive story jumps ahead a few years after RoboCop’s debut. SAC‑NORAD contracts Cyberdyne to develop Skynet, exploiting RoboCop’s technology. When Skynet awakens it launches a war and sends Terminators to the past. RoboCop destroys one, then storms Delta City, defeats the rogue RoboCain, and fights his way into the OCP tower, where he defeats a reprogrammed ED‑209 and plugs into a console—unwittingly feeding Skynet data and falling into a trap. In the future he reassembles his chassis, battles a Terminator‑infested wasteland and finally destroys Skynet, ending the machine uprising.
