Summary

Road Rash throws you into illegal Californian motorcycle races where speed and brute force go hand‑in‑hand. You begin each circuit with $1,000, compete against fourteen rivals, and must finish in the top four to progress. Five levels of five races each are linked by passwords, letting you pick up the action later.

The Genesis’s banked‑road engine, built by Dan Geisler and Carl Mey after an initial NES plan, gives the races an unforgettable sense of acceleration. Combat is unapologetically violent: you can punch, kick, or swing a club that a rival drops, while your bike sustains its own damage meter. Cops occasionally appear, issue fines and demand repairs if you crash or deplete stamina.

Rob Hubbard’s thumping score fuels the chaos, and two‑player mode lets a friend jump into the fray, adding a competitive edge I still love.

Storyline

In Road Rash for the Sega Genesis, players race through a series of courses across California. Each race pits you against rival bikers while you can fight them with fists, chain whips or guns. Winning a race lets you progress to tougher tracks and higher stakes. The game’s core loop mixes high‑speed bike handling with open‑ended combat, letting you knock opponents off their bikes or steal their weapons. As you win races you unlock new routes, tougher opponents, and better bikes, creating a nonstop adrenaline rush that defines the classic street‑racing combat experience.
