Summary
Rings of Power lets you assemble a party of six spell‑crafters and hunt down eleven legendary rings across a sprawling isometric world. You can wander through thirty towns, trade, bribe or simply chat with the locals, and the day‑night cycle actually changes who shows up and what quests are available. Vehicles range from dinosaurs and boats to full‑size dragons, while ring‑marked gateways whisk you to distant regions in an instant.
Combat is pure magic: there are no swords or armor, only a menu of over a hundred animated spells that you can set to fire automatically or pick by hand. Party members sit on the left side of the screen with blue shadows, enemies on the right with orange, and each fight drains a strength and a magic meter that can be restored by camping, which also speeds up time. Experience and gold earned in battle let you learn stronger incantations, and the game even stores your progress in a tiny EEPROM slot.
Naughty Dog’s first console effort, built on a reverse‑engineered Genesis kit, showcases 8×8‑pixel, 16‑color tiles that took six months to map out. Alexander Hinds supplied a memorable soundtrack, and a hidden cheat swaps the studio’s mascot for a cheeky Easter egg. While reviewers loved the sheer scope and visual ambition, they often complained about the clunky scrolling and the steep learning curve of the diagonal controls.
Storyline
Rings of Power on the Sega Genesis tells a high‑fantasy quest that spans centuries. The game opens with the divine Nexus the Benevolent using the Rod of Creation to transform the barren world of Ushka Bau into a paradise and gifting humanity six distinct Arts.
Nexus’s jealous brother, Void the Destroyer, stole the Rod, sparking a chaotic era that lasted 66 years. Their titanic clash shattered the Rod into two halves, each later divided into eleven Rings of Power that were hidden to prevent either sibling from regaining full power.
Five hundred years later, the Rings have become legend, but six Guildmasters uncover clues to their locations. As Guildmaster Thalmus the Wise prepares the Academy of the Mind’s top students, he is slain by Darius, a pupil corrupted by Void, and the surviving students are scattered by Thalmus’s dying word.
Buc, the Academy’s most promising student, assembles a party of the knight Slash, necromancer Mortimer, archer Feather, conjuror Alexi and enchanter Obliky. Together they recover all eleven Rings, confront Darius—now Void’s physical vessel—and defeat him at the Fount of Heaven.
Nexus reassembles the Rod of Creation, entrusts it to Buc, and departs. Returning to his world, Buc builds a grand palace atop the Fount of Heaven and rules from there, ending the saga.
