Summary

The Revenge of Shinobi (known in Japan as The Super Shinobi) was Sega’s first foray into the Shinobi series on the Genesis, and it was built as a hardware showcase. Yuzo Koshiro’s synth‑driven score pulses through eight districts, each split into two platforming stages and a boss fight, while the game’s four difficulty settings crank up enemy counts and trim starting lives for a real challenge.

Control feels tight: the D‑pad moves Joe Musashi, A triggers ninjutsu, B attacks, and C jumps, with a somersault that lets you vault higher and even hurl up to eight shuriken mid‑air. Bonus crates sprinkle extra lives, health packs, shuriken, and time‑bombs, and you can stock up on shuriken before you start. Four special ninjutsu techniques are available per life unless you snag a ninjutsu item, and the ending hinges on whether Musashi rescues his bride.

The enemy roster is a tongue‑in‑cheek parade of pop‑culture parodies—Rambo, Batman, Spider‑Man, Terminator, Godzilla—added after the designer’s limited input. Early revisions (1.00‑1.04) swapped out copyrighted designs, with version 1.04 finally excising the Spider‑Man boss for later releases.

Storyline

Revenge of Shinobi takes place three years after the original Shinobi. The criminal organization Zeed has reformed as "Neo Zeed" and seeks vengeance against the Oboro Ninja clan and its hero, Joe Musashi. Neo Zeed murders Musashi’s master and kidnaps his bride, Naoko, before Musashi can intervene.

After learning the plot from his dying master, Musashi sets out on a worldwide quest to destroy Neo Zeed’s forces and rescue Naoko. The game follows his journey as he battles the vicious army of the re‑branded syndicate.

The title features two possible endings: one where Musashi saves Naoko and another where he fails, leaving her fate uncertain.
