Summary
Rent a Hero stands out on the Mega Drive for injecting a hefty dose of comedy into the action‑role‑playing formula. While its visuals lean on the same engine that powered Sword of Vermilion, the world feels spruced with cartoonish sprites and punch‑line‑filled dialogue that keep the tone light. The biggest surprise comes in combat: instead of the classic turn‑based menus, encounters play out like a 2‑D fighter, letting you execute combos, blocks, and throws in real time. This hybrid approach forces you to think like a beat‑em‑up player while still managing inventory and quests, bridging two genres that rarely share space. The result is a quirky, fast‑paced adventure that still manages a surprising depth of strategy beneath its jokes.
Storyline
In the Sega Genesis game Rent‑A‑Hero, Taro Yamada lives in the quiet town of Corja, Japan, with his mother, his eccentric father and his younger sister Alyssa. The family recently moved there after his dad switched jobs. During their house‑warming party Taro orders pizza from the Sensational Cafeteria (SECA) but instead receives a mysterious Combat Armor suit. The suit instantly grants him incredible strength, yet it comes with a catch: he must pay for the armor’s upkeep. Realizing the potential, Taro decides to become a hero for hire, taking on a variety of heroic tasks and odd‑jobs to help the townspeople of Corja while keeping the bills paid.
