Summary

Rainbow Islands Extra offers a fresh twist on the classic platformer by making the "extra" mode the default setting. In this arcade‑only version, the familiar pastel‑tinted critters are swapped for foes ripped straight from Taito’s Darius shooters, while the island layouts stay untouched. Enemies and bosses appear in a reshuffled order, and each boss gains new attack patterns that crank up the difficulty. Players can still select the original Rainbow Islands stage set if they prefer the nostalgic look. The mode later shipped as part of the Mega Drive Rainbow Islands port, giving home gamers a taste of the limited‑run arcade experience.

Storyline

In Rainbow Islands Extra, brothers Bubby and Bobby embark on a quest to rescue the island’s residents, who have been transformed into Bubble Dragons by the sinister Boss of Shadow. The duo must explore all ten Rainbow Islands, hunting down the large gems and reflective mirrors hidden throughout each level. Collecting these items weakens the shadowy foe and paves the way to the final showdown. By defeating the Boss of Shadow, Bubby and Bobby restore the inhabitants to their normal forms, bringing peace back to the islands.
