Summary

Crusader of Centy (Soleil in PAL regions) feels like a love letter to 16‑bit adventure fans, blending the overhead action of classic Zelda titles with a quirky animal‑buddy system. As you wander the vibrant world, you quickly discover that you can’t talk to people—only to the critters and plants that populate the landscape, and each new animal you befriend grants a fresh ability, from a dog that pins foes down to a penguin that freezes enemies with an icy sword boost. You can equip two of these powers at once, and hunting down all sixteen companions becomes a rewarding puzzle in itself.

Behind the scenes, Nextech’s team—many of whom cut their teeth at Wolf Team—crafted the game as an accessible action RPG, deliberately pushing the Genesis’s color palette to rival the SNES. Composer Motokazu Shinoda’s piano‑driven score adds a surprisingly melodic backdrop, while programmer Yukihiko Tani fought to keep the designers’ ambitious ideas alive despite hardware limits. Though some critics called it a "Zelda clone," most praised its graphics, inventive mechanics, and charming animal roster, even if the controls and sound design occasionally fell short. The second half of the adventure flips the script, restoring human dialogue and introducing time‑travel twists that deepen the mystery of the dragon‑fueled war.

Storyline

Ragnacenty follows Corona, a newly‑turned‑14‑year‑old boy from Soleil Town, where a local law forces every boy of his age to train for battle. After his father’s death, Corona inherits the famed sword and shield that once defended the city, setting him on a heroic path. In the first half of the game he roams the world, unlocking new areas while only being able to converse with animals and plants, never with other humans. Defeating Maldra the Dragon (simply called the Dragon in the US version) marks the turning point, after which Corona regains his voice and can speak to people again. The second half sees him traveling through time, trying to build a better future and uncover why the monsters have declared war on humanity.
