Summary

The leaked Genesis prototype of Prince of Persia 2 – The Shadow and the Flame offers a fascinating glimpse into what could have been a fully realized console release. Ported by Microïds and slated for publication by Psygnosis, the build was abandoned in an almost finished state, leaving collectors with a rare snapshot of early‑90s development. Gameplay-wise the sequel leans heavily into combat, allowing up to four foes to appear simultaneously and demanding quick reflexes alongside the classic platforming and puzzle elements. A strict 75‑minute real‑time clock pushes players to balance exploration with speed, while lives are unlimited but time can only be recovered by loading a previous save. Visually, the prototype pushes the Genesis hardware further than its predecessor, delivering richer backdrops, larger environments and a noticeable jump in graphical complexity. The result is a more action‑packed experience that still retains the series’ signature blend of acrobatics and brain‑teasing challenges.

Storyline

Prince of Persia 2 – The Shadow and the Flame (Proto) on Sega Genesis picks up eleven days after the original adventure. The Prince, celebrated for defeating Jaffar, declines riches and asks for the Princess’s hand, a request the Sultan reluctantly grants. Disguised as a beggar, he enters the palace, only to be confronted by a magically disguised Jaffar who orders his expulsion; the Prince leaps through a window and escapes the city aboard a ship.

While asleep on the vessel, the Prince dreams of a mysterious woman who summons him. A bolt of lightning, cast by Jaffar, strikes the ship, and he awakens on a foreign island. He battles reanimated skeletons in a cave, defeats their leader, loses his sword, and flees on a magic carpet. Back in Persia, Jaffar usurps the throne in the Prince’s guise, and the Princess falls ill under his death‑spell.

The carpet carries him to the ruins of Basra, where goblin heads, snakes and traps abound. He discovers a dagger and, after touching a sword on the ground, receives a vision of his mother, who reveals his royal lineage and the sword’s heritage. She urges him to avenge the massacre that claimed his family.

Mounted on a magical horse, the Prince reaches a red temple inhabited by bird‑headdressed monks. There he learns his shadow can leave his body, uses it to claim the temple’s magic flame, and the monks kneel before him. Returning to Persia, he confronts Jaffar, burns the tyrant with shadow and flame, and the Princess awakens. The couple celebrates as the Prince scatters Jaffar’s ashes, while an old witch watches them through a crystal ball, hinting at a sequel that never materialized.
