Summary
"Power Athlete"—the Japanese title that became "Deadly Moves" on the Genesis and "Power Moves" on the SNES—stands out for mixing classic head‑to‑head combat with a light RPG twist. You only start as Joe, an American kenpo fighter, but you can level up his strength, speed and endurance between bouts, giving the single‑player experience a surprising sense of progression.
The roster reads like a world‑tour of fighting archetypes: Warren the hulking Hawaiian bruiser, Reayon the lone female Thai‑Chinese martial artist, Vagnad the onyx‑skinned Russian wrestler, knife‑wielding Spanish matador Nick, multi‑disciplinary Japanese kabuki star Buoh, hard‑fist Chinese master Gaoluon, and Baraki the Kenyan tribal chief—both Nick and Baraki belong to the secret Junk organization. The hidden Ranker serves as the final champion, unlockable only via passwords.
Despite the different names, the Genesis and SNES versions are identical in gameplay and characters. The only real divergence lies in the packaging: the Genesis box shows a blood‑splattered punch, while the SNES cover recolors the gore as sweat to satisfy Nintendo’s anti‑violence policy. Ironically, the game itself contains no blood or "deadly" moves at all.
Storyline
Power Athlete’s single‑player campaign puts you in the shoes of Joe, a determined athlete on a quest to become the ultimate champion of champions. As you progress through a series of increasingly tough events, each victory brings you closer to the top of the leaderboard. The climax of Joe’s journey is a showdown with Ranker, the game’s final boss, who guards the title of champion. Defeating Ranker crowns Joe as the champion of champions and completes the story.
