Summary
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure drops you into a lush, side‑scrolling jungle where you control Pitfall Harry Jr. with a six‑button layout that lets you whip enemies, fire sling stones (even charge them for a stronger blast), toss boomerangs and set off explosives. Hidden letters spelling “Pitfall” pepper each stage, and a secret doorway in the fourth level unlocks the original 1982 Atari classic as a nostalgic bonus. The game’s early levels feel linear, but later areas open up into maze‑like sections that reward exploration and careful checkpoint management. A quirky crouch combo—pressing down and jump together—lets you slip through tight passages, while ammo pickups keep the action flowing.
Originally slated for the SNES, development shifted to the Sega Genesis, where it launched in North America in November 1994 and rolled out to Europe and Japan shortly after. A notorious bug traps players in the “Runaway Minecar” stage if they alter the control scheme, making the default layout essential. Critics praised its vibrant visuals, intense soundtrack, and the clever inclusion of the retro Pitfall, though some noted occasional control lag during animations. By mid‑1996 the title had sold over a million copies, and it later resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console in 2009 before being delisted at the end of 2013.
Storyline
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure picks up after Pitfall II: Lost Caverns, when the original Pitfall Harry has settled down and raised his son, Harry Junior. The younger Harry inherits his father’s thirst for exploration and becomes an adventurer in his own right. Both father and son venture into the Central American jungle, aiming for the legendary Mayan city of Uaxactun and its hidden treasure. When Harry Jr. finally uncovers the relic, an evil Mayan warrior spirit named Zakelua snatches his father, forcing the son to mount a daring rescue.
In the game, you control Pitfall Harry Jr. as he navigates the treacherous Mayan jungle, battles the spirit’s minions, and strives to free his captured dad and claim the ancient treasure.
