Summary

Pit‑Fighter was one of the first games to feature digitized live‑action sprites, captured in front of a bluescreen and streamed straight onto the screen instead of being redrawn. The result feels oddly cinematic for a 1990s arcade brawler, especially when the crowd onstage occasionally tosses weapons or shoves a confused player back into the ring. Pressing all three attack buttons unleashes a flashy “super move”, adding a splash of strategy to the otherwise brute‑force punches and kicks.

The three selectable fighters each bring a distinct flavor: Buzz, a hulking ex‑wrestler; Ty, the speedy Afro‑Asian kick‑boxing champion; and Kato, a lightning‑quick black‑belt. Up to three friends can brawl simultaneously, cycling through 15 different bouts against a roster that includes an Executioner, a masked warrior and a bizarre Knife Woman. The Genesis port earned a 90% rating from CVG, an 80% from MegaTech, and even cracked Mega’s top‑30 list. A sequel was teased for 1993, promising new characters like a roller‑queen and a karate champion, but it never materialized.

Storyline

In Pit‑Fighter, the climax is the so‑called “Championship Match.” The lone survivor must face a mysterious, taunting figure known as the Masked Warrior, who appears between bouts to jeer the combatants. If more than one player is in the game, the rivals are forced to battle each other to the death until only one remains. That final victor then steps into the arena for the showdown with the Masked Warrior, ending the tournament.
