Summary

Phelios launched on the Genesis in 1990, letting players assume the role of the sun god Apollo astride his winged horse Pegasus. The game scrolls vertically through seven myth‑infused chapters, each split into two to four sections distinguished by different music and brief Japanese text. Apollo’s sword fires tiny shots, but holding the fire button charges a much larger fireball that is essential against the heavily armored foes. Along the way you can gather items that boost speed and firepower, and intermissions between stages reveal what’s happening at the temple.

The roster of bosses reads like a Greek mythology cheat‑sheet: Medusa, the Graeae, the Siren, Antaeus, a crystal‑brain Scylla, Cerberus, and finally Typhon himself. Apollo can survive up to four hits, but colliding with a wall or a boss’s head ends the ride instantly. The North American Genesis version features English voice samples, while the arcade never reached the U.S. because of “strong” bondage‑themed cut‑scenes. The title later appeared on the Wii Virtual Console (2009) and as part of Hamster’s Arcade Archives for Switch and PS4 in 2023.

Storyline

Phelios drops you into a Greek‑mythology setting where you control Apollo, a youthful sun god‑prince, astride his winged horse Pegasus. The game’s scrolling shooter has you soaring through a series of mythic locales as you hunt down the forces that have seized Artemis.

In the story, Artemis—presented as Apollo’s sister and moon goddess but also cast as a princess‑type love interest—is captured by the titan‑demon Typhon. Typhon locks her in a temple dungeon where the monster Medusa turns her to stone, prompting Apollo to battle through the beast’s minions to free her.
