Summary

Pac‑Mania takes the classic maze chase and lifts it into a pseudo‑3D world, letting you view the corridors from an oblique angle that feels fresh even to longtime fans. The biggest surprise is Pac‑Man’s new ability to jump, letting you vault over the pursuing ghosts for a split‑second of safety – a mechanic that later rounds extend to the green‑capped Funky and the grey‑shaded Spunky, though Spunky remains untouchable. Power Pellets still turn the ghosts blue, but red and green variants appear as bonus items, doubling ghost points or boosting speed respectively. Four looping mazes – Block Town, Pac‑Man’s Park, Sandbox Land and Jungly Steps – scroll both horizontally and vertically, with some edges wrapping around, and each set of rounds introduces new ghosts and higher scores. The Genesis port, handled by Sculptured Software, kept the arcade’s fast‑paced action intact and earned a B‑minus from Entertainment Weekly in 1991, cementing its reputation as a standout maze title on the 16‑bit console.
