Summary

I first ran into Out of This World on the Mega-Drive and was immediately struck by a prologue that isn’t in the SNES or 3DO releases. Interplay's port keeps the cinematic feel but cranks up the challenge, packing in more enemies that make each checkpoint feel like a real test of reflexes. The gameplay actually runs a notch faster than the SNES version, though the reduced colour palette is obvious on the Genesis hardware.
What really gives the experience a pulse is the dynamic soundtrack, built from arrangements used on the SNES and Apple IIGS, shifting smoothly with the on-screen action. A later Sega CD edition even introduced a fresh score and bundled the sequel Heart of the Alien, rounding out the alien-filled adventure.

Storyline

Out of This World follows young physicist Lester Knight Chaykin, who during a thunderstorm activates a particle‑accelerator experiment. A bolt of lightning triggers a fusion explosion, ripping a hole in the fabric of time and hurling Lester onto a bleak alien world. He soon discovers the planet is populated by hostile native creatures.

After a frantic escape, Lester is captured by a race of humanoid aliens and thrown into a subterranean prison camp. There he meets an alien prisoner named Buddy, and the two plot a daring breakout. Their flight takes them through the grim prison complex, winding caves and a towering structure, all while battling alien soldiers and solving environmental puzzles. The partnership between man and alien becomes the only hope for survival.

In the final showdown Lester is gravely wounded, but with Buddy’s aid he defeats his attacker and reaches the tower’s summit. Buddy hoists the dying Lester onto a dragon‑like creature perched at the peak. Together they soar into the distance, disappearing over the horizon.
