Summary

The Sega Genesis version of Out of This World, often called Another World, was handled by Interplay and arrived in 1993 with a few quirks that set it apart from its console siblings. It runs noticeably faster than the SNES port, but the trade‑off is a reduced colour palette that gives the game a slightly harsher visual feel. Interplay cranked up the challenge, adding extra enemies and tougher encounters—a common tactic back then to stretch the playtime. A unique prologue kicks off the Genesis experience, distinct from the SNES and 3DO introductions, and the soundtrack pulls arrangements from the SNES and Apple IIGS releases, delivering a dynamic musical backdrop throughout. Later, a Sega CD edition arrived with a fresh soundtrack and was bundled with the sequel, Heart of the Alien, rounding out the series’ presence on Sega hardware.

Storyline

Out of This World (known in some regions as Another World) drops you into the shoes of Lester Knight Chaykin, a young physicist who, during a thunderstorm, fires up a particle‑accelerator experiment that is struck by lightning. The resulting fusion creates a hole in time and space, flinging Lester onto a barren alien world. He must first evade hostile indigenous creatures before being captured by humanoid aliens and thrown into a subterranean prison camp.

Lester’s escape comes with the help of an alien captive named Buddy. Together they navigate a gauntlet of hazardous environments—ranging from the prison complex to winding caves and a towering structure—battling alien soldiers, wild beasts, and solving environmental puzzles along the way.

In the final showdown Lester is gravely wounded, yet with Buddy’s aid he defeats his attacker and reaches the tower’s summit. Buddy hoists the dying Lester onto a dragon‑like creature, and the pair soar away toward the horizon, leaving the alien world behind.
