Summary
Nobunaga's Ambition is the second entry in Koei’s historical simulation line, expanding the map to a full 50‑province representation that stretches from Ezo in the north to Kyushu in the south. Players choose one of the famous daimyo—such as Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen, or Uesugi Kenshin—and tackle four distinct campaign scenarios that span key years of the Sengoku era.
The game blends strategic resource management, diplomacy and turn‑based combat on a hex‑grid battlefield. Every season you allocate rice, gold, and troops, adjust taxes, arrange marriages or non‑aggression pacts, build flood control, and even spy on rivals. Battles progress day by day, allowing you to force retreats, crush command units, or simply wear the enemy down until supplies run out. The menu‑driven interface packs all these commands into an approachable yet deep system, and a multiplayer mode lets friends vie for the shogunate together.
U.S. reviews praised the depth and polished graphics, awarding the PC version four‑star and calling it a “highly recommended” classic. Console ports on the Genesis received milder applause, noted for their solid menus but criticized for offering little new beyond Koei’s established formula.
Storyline
Nobunaga's Ambition on the Sega Genesis drops you into the chaotic Sengoku period, letting you command legendary warlords such as Oda Nobunaga, Shingen Takeda, Kenshin Uesugi, or other regional daimyōs. Your mission is to bring the fifty scattered kingdoms—from the northern island of Ezo down to Kyushu in the south—under a single banner.
The game structures its campaign around four historical scenarios: “Battle for the East” and “Daimyo Power Struggles,” both kicking off in 1560, “Ambition Untamed” set in 1571, and “Road Towards Unification” beginning in 1582. Each scenario frames the struggle for dominance during the sixteenth‑century power vacuum, challenging you to out‑maneuver rivals and forge a unified Japan.
