Summary
Mystic Defender (known in Japan as Kujaku‑ou II) turns the classic side‑scroll shooter on its head by making magic the only weapon you wield. You begin with a simple energy orb that can be charged for a single, powerful blast, but as you explore the levels you can snag power‑ups that transform your arsenal. One such upgrade is the spiritual flame, which you can aim straight ahead or diagonally; a full charge sends a long‑range blaze across the screen. Another is the spherical power, a set of ricocheting spheres that multiply when fully charged, creating a chaotic dance of projectiles. When things get overwhelming, a screen‑clearing spell summons a three‑headed dragon that sweeps the battlefield clean of enemies and stray shots. The game is essentially a faithful Genesis port of the Japanese title, stripped of its original anime branding, letting the spell‑casting action speak for itself.
Storyline
Mystic Defender unfolds in an alternate‑Japan fantasy world where the anarchic sorcerer Zareth kidnaps a young woman named Alexandra. He intends to sacrifice her to bring back the ancient evil god Zao, and as his ritual progresses the dreaded Azuchi Castle—Zao’s dwelling—rises ominously from the waters.
Enter Joe Yamato, an experienced sorcerer summoned to thwart Zareth’s dark scheme. Armed with mystical powers, Joe battles through a gauntlet of bizarre disciples and demonic minions, racing to rescue Alexandra and stop the resurrection of Zao before the castle’s power becomes unstoppable.
