Summary
The Genesis version of Valis—often just called Valis—started as a secret side‑scrolling project born from a Sukeban Deka‑inspired concept. Programmers Masahiro Akishino and Osamu Ikegame drafted the idea for a delinquent heroine, but it was only after a skeptical Telenet boss rejected the early graphics that writer Hiroki Hayashi stepped in, reshaping the game around his own unfinished novel and giving birth to the Valis mythos.
Gameplay feels like a stripped‑down Valis III: the d‑pad steers Yuko, while three buttons let her slide, jump, and swing her iconic Sword of Valis, which can be upgraded three times. Defeating bosses grants magic spells, adding a layer of strategy to the seven stages that culminate in a showdown with King Rogles’ Dark Lords.
Released in 1991 by Riot, a Telenet subsidiary, the cartridge featured artwork by Osamu Nabeshima and reached North America through Renovation Products. Decades later the title resurfaced on Evercade’s Renovation Collection 1, the Switch’s Valis: The Fantasm Soldier Collection II, and a Retro‑Bit anthology, while Edia re‑issued it on the Japanese eShop in December 2022.
Critics praised the presentation—large bosses, cinematic flair, and a memorable soundtrack—but repeatedly noted the sluggish pace of both Yuko and her foes, a trait that could deter seasoned action fans. The collector’s edition even ships in a transparent blue cartridge, complete with a reversible cover, slipcase, numbered certificate, and art cards, turning a modest side‑scroller into a true retro treasure.
Storyline
Mugen Senshi Valis follows Yuko Asou, a Japanese teenage schoolgirl who is summoned as the Valis warrior and given the mystical Valis sword to defend Earth, the spirit realm and the dream world Vecanti from the demon lord Rogles. Rogles has snuffed out the light that powers Vecanti, prompting Queen Valia to call for a brave soul; Yuko answers, becoming the sword‑wielding champion tasked with restoring the light. Her classmate Reiko Kirishima, meanwhile, has been brain‑washed by Rogles and is set against her.
In the game’s opening, Yuko finishes a long school day when a freak storm mirrors a nightmare she had the night before. She encounters Reiko, who offers cryptic warnings, and is suddenly attacked by a monster; the Valis sword materializes in her hand and she defeats the foe. Determined to return home, she discovers the city overrun by demons and must battle across seven action‑packed stages.
Armed with the Sword of Valis, Yuko fights King Rogles’ dark forces while protecting the Fantasm Jewel of Queen Valia. Her quest is to free both the real world and Vecanti from encroaching darkness, fulfilling the queen’s desperate plea for salvation.
