Summary

When the Sega Genesis version of Mortal Kombat hit shelves in the fall of 1993, the whole scene felt like a "Mortal Monday" celebration. The cartridge packed the arcade’s iconic five‑button moves into the console’s three‑button layout, which made some combos feel a bit clunky, but the blood‑splattered Fatalities were still there – unlocked with the cheeky cheat code ABACABB, a nod to the band Genesis’s 1981 album. The game earned an MA‑13 rating from the Videogame Rating Council, and despite the cruder graphics on the home system, reviewers praised its gritty sound, faithful character animation, and the strategic depth of its dedicated block button.

Sales exploded: by mid‑1994 the Genesis port had moved over six million copies worldwide, making it the best‑selling console title of 1993 in the U.S. and securing a GameRankings average of 84 %. Critics noted the difficulty of pulling off special moves on the three‑button controller, yet still called the port a "first‑rate conversion" with "great graphics, sound, and control" when using the hidden Mode A setting.

Beyond the numbers, the game’s legacy lived on in the tagline "PREPARE YOURSELF… The #1 arcade hit is here," reminding fans that the Kombat Warriors – from Sub‑Zero to Raiden – still delivered bone‑shattering combos and unforgettable finishing moves, cementing Mortal Kombat’s place in fighting‑game history.

Storyline

Mortal Kombat (Genesis) takes place in Earthrealm, where Shang Tsung’s island hosts a tournament across seven locations. Banished 500 years ago, Shang Tsung seized control of the event with the help of Goro, a four‑armed half‑human dragon who has won nine consecutive tournaments. If Goro wins again, Emperor Shao Kahn of Outworld will be allowed to claim Earthrealm.

A new generation of Earthrealm warriors enters to stop him. Liu Kang, a former White Lotus monk, fights under Raiden’s guidance; Sonya Blade seeks to rescue her captured Special Forces squad; Johnny Cage hopes a win will revive his acting career; Kano, a Black Dragon mercenary, wants Shang Tsung’s treasures; Scorpion returns as an undead ninja to avenge Sub‑Zero; Sub‑Zero enters to assassinate Shang Tsung for a bounty; Reptile serves Shang Tsung hoping to save his species.

The tournament ends with Liu Kang defeating Goro and Shang Tsung, freeing the souls Shang Tsung had imprisoned. Scorpion finally kills Sub‑Zero, avenging himself. Sonya rescues her squad but Kano escapes by boat, while Reptile flees to Outworld.

Raiden teleports the surviving Earthrealmers to safety as the island sinks. Johnny Cage returns to Hollywood and launches a wildly popular Mortal Kombat film franchise. Shao Kahn, outraged by the loss, sets the stage for the sequel.
