Summary

Mortal Kombat II on the Sega Genesis surprised me with how faithfully it kept the series’ signature blood and Fatalities—no secret code needed, unlike the first Genesis port. Probe Software managed to squeeze in exclusive Easter eggs and even support for the Sega Activator motion controller, giving the cartridge a few quirky tricks that only die‑hard fans noticed.

The gameplay feels tighter than the arcade original: crouching punches, more distinct low and high kicks, and roundhouse kicks that can launch opponents across the screen. Combos flow smoother thanks to shorter recovery times, and the faster‑than‑the‑first‑game pace makes each match feel like a frantic dance of strikes and counter‑moves. New characters such as Kitana, Mileena, and the hidden Noob Saibot add fresh move‑sets, while the added Babalities and Friendships inject a dark‑humored contrast to the brutal finishers.

Critics praised the conversion; C+VG called it an "incredible job" and EGM noted it as a "great translation" despite hardware limits. The cartridge shipped over 2.5 million copies on launch day, topped Genesis sales charts in September 1994, and still earns a spot on modern best‑of lists for its lasting impact on fighting‑game history.

Storyline

Mortal Kombat II (often called Mortal Kombat 2) picks up after Shang Tsung’s loss to Liu Kang in the first tournament. Desperate to stay alive, the sorcerer begs his master, the Outworld emperor Shao Kahn, to spare him and proposes holding the next Mortal Kombat Tournament on Outworld soil, forcing Earthrealm’s fighters to travel abroad. Kahn agrees, restores Tsung’s youth, and sends an invitation to the thunder god Raiden, who gathers his warriors – Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade’s partner Jax, Kitana, Mileena, Kung Lao, Scorpion, Sub‑Zero’s younger brother Kuai Liang, Reptile and others – and leads them into the hostile realm.

The tournament is far more dangerous because Shao Kahn enjoys the home‑field advantage, and his bodyguard Kintaro is sent to avenge Goro’s defeat. Liu Kang ultimately triumphs, defeating both Kintaro and Shao Kahn, while the game also reveals that the original Sub‑Zero (Bi‑Han) was slain by Scorpion and that Kuai Liang now wears the Sub‑Zero mask. Each character can finish the story mode with a unique, non‑canonical ending, adding extra replay value.
