Summary
Traysia (known in Japan as Minato no Traysia) is a party‑based RPG that drops you into a grid‑styled battlefield where your characters occupy the lower half of the screen and foes loom above. Each turn you must maneuver your party into range before they can strike, and spells fire in one of four directions, only hitting enemies that line up on the same axis. The combat feels like a tactical chess match, with positioning and timing outweighing raw stats. The North American launch featured a striking cover painted by Mick McGinty, courtesy of Renovation Products, and the game quickly earned a reputation for its quirky visual style. Critics were far from kind, handing it scores that hovered around the mid‑teens to low‑fifties percent, citing clunky graphics, a frustrating magic system, and a lackluster storyline.
Storyline
In Minato no Traysia (commonly called Traysia), the adventure begins in the port town of Johanna where a young man named Roy dreams of leaving home. When his uncle’s traveling caravan sets out, Roy departs with a pendant from his sweetheart Traysia as a promise to return. In the kingdom of Salon he joins a hunting party—Banegie, a mysterious knight with a hidden royal past; Magellan, an outcast swordsman; and Floyd, a wizard serving the local lord. The group soon discovers that Floyd is manipulating the lord to eliminate rivals, and after a betrayal they defeat the corrupt ruler while Floyd escapes.
The party’s journey then takes them across war‑torn kingdoms, where they broker a royal marriage and thwart wizards who are using dark magic to erase memories. After vanquishing the Queen of the Witches and breaking the memory spell, Floyd reappears, only to flee again. Banegie suggests a visit to Roy’s hometown, setting the stage for the final showdown.
Returning to Johanna, Roy finds the town under martial law, his home burned, and Traysia captive. Floyd has seized control, and a desperate battle ensues. Banegie sacrifices herself to shield Roy, confesses her love, and urges him to marry Traysia. In the epilogue Roy fulfills that wish, retiring to run a tavern and supply shop while sharing his tales with the next generation.
