Summary
Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra never made it to the Sega Genesis shelves, even though a prototype ROM surfaced online showing New World Computing’s work and a planned FCI publishing run. The only official Sega release was a Mega‑CD version that slipped out exclusively in Japan, leaving Western fans with a tantalizing glimpse of what could have been.
The game pushes the series’ first‑person, turn‑based engine forward with brighter VGA‑style graphics, richer sound‑card support, synthesized speech and, for the first time, mouse interaction. A graphical HUD replaces the old text‑only stats, displaying each hero’s face and mood, while spells are chosen from a list instead of cryptic numeric codes.
Exploration feels smoother thanks to an expanded map grid, an automapper that erases the need for hand‑drawn charts, and enemies that appear on the horizon before they strike. Ranged weapons gain a clear tactical edge, loot is collected automatically after combat, and you can save almost anywhere—except in the Arena and Castle Greywind Dungeon.
Storyline
After Sheltem’s defeat on Cron in *Might and Magic II*, a fresh band of adventurers from his homeworld Terra is drawn into the ongoing clash of the two Guardians. The party—Sir Caneghem, Crag Hack, Maximus, Resurrectra, Dark Shade, Kastore, Robert the Wise and Tolberti—teams up with the enigmatic Corak to thwart Sheltem’s renewed schemes. Their journey takes them across the Isles of Terra, a collection of floating nacelle worlds that Sheltem has hurled toward various suns, threatening countless lives.
Guided by Corak’s journals about the Ancients, the Elemental Lords and the “Forces of the Dome,” the heroes battle myriad terrors before confronting the infamous “Maze from Hell.” Surviving its defenses earns them the title of “Ultimate Adventurers” and grants access to the Ancients’ submerged seedship, the Lincoln.
In the finale Sheltem escapes in a pod toward Xeen’s nacelle while Corak pursues. Corak contacts the party, teaching them matter‑transfer techniques to land the Lincoln safely. The adventurers set sail after Corak and Sheltem, a quest that leads directly into the events of *Might and Magic IV: Clouds of Xeen* and later sees them appear as powerful NPCs in *Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor*.
