Summary
Metal Sonic Hyperdrive is a fan‑made modification of the classic Sonic the Hedgehog on the Genesis, swapping the original hero for a reprogrammed Metal Sonic as the playable lead. The hack keeps the familiar side‑scrolling feel while giving the metallic antagonist his own spotlight.
Beyond Metal Sonic, the game unlocks a quirky roster: Sonic himself appears with his standard Spindash, the mysterious Lone Devil (KAZ) wields a scythe and can free‑fall, Kirby joins the fray with his signature inhale (though without copy powers), and even the unofficial crossover character Somari shows up, offering a slightly altered Spindash.
Each character brings a distinct ability set: Metal Sonic can unleash the high‑speed Super Peel‑Out and the powerful Maximum Hyperdrive attack, Sonic sticks to his classic spin, Lone Devil slices through enemies, Kirby sucks them in, and Somari spins with a unique twist. This blend of familiar mechanics and oddball extras gives the hack a fresh, nostalgic flavor.
Storyline
In Metal Sonic Hyperdrive, Dr. Robotnik rebuilds his rogue creation Eggrobo and dispatches it to hunt down the Chaos Emeralds. While on the trail, Eggrobo kidnaps Tails, hoping the capture will draw Sonic into a trap. Tails, however, slips away unnoticed, infiltrates Robotnik’s base, and pilfers spare robot parts. Using those components he constructs his own version of Metal Sonic—codenamed METAL—that can think and feel much like the blue blur himself. After locating Eggrobo’s last known position on Robotic Isle, Tails launches his new Metal Sonic to thwart Eggrobo and put an end to Robotnik’s latest scheme.
