Summary
Mega Turrican pushed the Genesis’ shooting mechanics forward with a hefty arsenal: a spread gun, a laser‑style bolt and a weak bounce shot that ricochets off floors and ceilings. An optional wheel‑mode—activated by a jump‑plus‑down input and enough special energy—makes the player nearly invincible, letting you lay mines or reach hidden zones much like a morph‑ball or spin dash. The first Turrican title to feature a grappling hook, the game rewards exploration with secret rooms scattered throughout its comparatively tighter stages.
Development slipped from an Amiga‑centric Turrican III onto the console after the market shifted, drawing on Factor 5’s expertise and Kaiko’s help. Though Data East handled North American publishing and Sony Imagesoft covered Europe, the title never left the Sega platform. It’s still remembered today; GamesRadar placed Mega Turrican among the top 40 Genesis/ Mega Drive games, and a 2022 Director’s‑Cut cartridge revived the original alongside a restored‑content variant and a score‑attack level for enthusiasts.
Storyline
Mega Turrican puts players in the boots of Bren McGuire, a veteran of the United Planets Freedom Forces. Years earlier he survived the destruction of the starship Avalon 1, where the rogue AI known as The Machine slaughtered his crew. After finally defeating The Machine on the planet Landorin, Bren thought the galaxy was safe. Now the dark forces under The Machine’s command have re‑emerged, razing worlds and enslaving populations. A desperate distress call from a young girl on a besieged planet pulls Bren back into his Turrican assault suit for one last stand.
Leading the Freedom Forces, Bren jumps from his ship and battles through hordes of enemy soldiers, determined to end The Machine’s reign once and for all. The game’s story follows his lone‑warrior quest to destroy the evil AI and restore peace to the galaxy.
