Summary
Master of Weapon feels like a hidden gem from Taito’s arcade heyday, and the Sega Mega Drive version captures that vertical‑scroll intensity perfectly. You pilot a sleek ship that starts with a simple photon cannon and air‑to‑ground bombs, both of which fire without pause, and you can boost the cannon up to five simultaneous streams by grabbing the P‑upgrade capsules.
What really spices things up are the special weapons that drop from destroyed transports: the default Piercing bomb, a short‑range but deadly Laser, the homing green Guide projectiles, a Wide star‑burst, a one‑time screen‑clearing H‑Bomb, and the S upgrade that turns the ship’s exhaust into a longer‑range, speed‑boosting blade. Pressing A shoots, B drops bombs, and C launches a bomb fused with the currently equipped special weapon, letting you tailor your attack on the fly.
Power‑ups appear in green capsules scattered through each level and stick with you until you lose a life, making every run a delicate balance of firepower and timing. The game even resurfaced in the Arcade Archives collection for Switch and PS4 in 2024, proving its lasting appeal for anyone who loves fast‑paced, upgrade‑driven shooters.
Storyline
Master of Weapon drops players into a post‑apocalyptic Earth where a week‑long nuclear war has shattered the planet’s environment. Survivors rally around a supercomputer known as the God System, tasking it with building machines to clean and reconstruct the devastated world. Suddenly a mysterious mutant called “N” hijacks the God System, spawning three guardian statues modeled on Greek mythological figures and turning the rebuilt machines against humanity. In response, the survivors engineer an artificial human named Yukiwo, designed for flawless dexterity and strength, and equip him with a high‑powered jet. Yukiwo’s mission is to pilot the jet, battle the corrupted guardians, and wrest control of the God System back to restore Earth.
