Summary

Master of Monsters is a turn‑based strategy game that lets you summon a roster of fantasy creatures onto a hex‑grid board, then move them to capture towers and eliminate rivals. Each hex touches six others, so positioning feels like a puzzle, and the presence of a single "Master" unit adds a high‑stakes twist—lose the Master and you’re out.

The game boasts a surprisingly deep monster roster, with veteran units gaining levels and, in some editions, the ability to equip weapons or armor. Its design echoed System Soft’s hardcore wargame Daisenryaku, yet the monster‑summoning mechanic later inspired titles such as Lords of Chaos, Pokémon and even the real‑time battles of StarCraft. Developers of the open‑source Wesnoth have cited it as a key influence.

Although the Sega Genesis version never won universal praise—RPGFan called it "excruciatingly repetitive"—its modest North American success earned a Saturn sequel and a PlayStation spin‑off called Disciples of Gaia. Recent years have seen the series revived on modern consoles, with a Switch/PlayStation 4‑5 release in Japan and a re‑issue on PlayStation 5 in 2026, keeping the nostalgic hex‑board battles alive for a new generation.
