Summary
I first stumbled on S.S. Lucifer: Man Overboard! while hunting obscure Genesis titles. The game puts you in the shoes of Kevin Codner, a rescue mariner who must shepherd frantic passengers to safety before the lower decks flood. Its puzzles feel like a watery twist on Lemmings—you manipulate levers and platforms to guide the crowd toward the exits, but every delayed move raises the water level. Though originally an Amiga project called Sink or Swim, Codemasters licensed the Sega port and Odysseys Software handled the conversion for both Mega‑Drive and Game Gear. Oddly enough, the whole package was never sold in North America or Japan, remaining a European‑and‑Australian secret.
Storyline
In the Sega Genesis side‑scroller Man Overboard!, you step into the boots of Kevin Codner, an aquatic hero with a yellow submarine at his command. The game opens with a chaotic scene aboard the SS Lucifer, where the captain accidentally pulls the plug from his bath, sending a torrent of water flooding the vessel. The exact cause of the disaster is never explained, but the ship is clearly in trouble. Kevin dives in, navigating the flooded corridors and rescuing panicked passengers. Each level challenges you to guide the submarine through hazards while bringing the ship’s occupants to safety.
